Most people are gearing up for the celebrations next week and a few days shy of the actual holiday celebrations means that there is a lot of excitement and anticipation to burn off. So, we have compiled 10 activities and events you can check out so you can have a little bit of weekend fun while waiting for the parties and fireworks to arrive.

Tell the family that you will be taking them out for a little "cultural immersion" and bring them to the LA Convention Center this weekend. Experience the world of Japanese Animation and pop culture with the largest anime convention in North America. Attractions include exhibit halls with the latest and greatest anime productions, gaming, artists displaying their talents at the Artist Alley, dance parties, a fashion show, karaoke, manga, and, of course, cosplay (costume play) bringing the world-famous characters to life.

2. Dirty Dancing + Fireworks

It's the 30th anniversary screening of one of the tastier coming-of-age dance flicks, Dirty Dancing. Cinespia will be celebrating this with a themed photo booth and a DJ dance party. The rip-roaring, hip-rattling dance classic will be followed by a masterful firework spectacular that will light the sky over Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

3. Monterey International Pop Festival: Music, Love and Flowers, 1967

Take the kids down legendary music history when you go to the Grammy Museum's Monterey International Pop Festival: Music, Love and Flowers, 1967. This is where they would learn that before Woodstock, Glastonbury and Coachella, there was the Monterey International Pop Festival. The first American rock festival and the breakout stage for Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and Ravi Shankar, as well as The Who and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, who, as the famous story goes, tossed a coin to see which would perform first.

4. 3rd Annual Venice Block Party feat. Phantogram

On Independence day weekend, 2332 Collective and Restless Group are teaming up to bring you the 3rd Annual Venice Block Party. Indulge your inner foodie and shopaholic at this weekly food-focused market. The Brooklyn export has landed in the Arts District and become a hotbed of fantastic food and retail vendors, with some that are testing out their dishes before launching a full-blown brick-and-mortar in the city. Bonus: there is plentiful (and free, for two hours!) parking in the nearby parking garage.

7. The Princess and The Frog Musical

8. Eastside Mural Ride

A family-friendly ride through the neighborhoods of East Los Angeles and City Terrace, celebrating the rich history of murals that reflect the unique spirit of communities, and to encourage transportation policy that encourages bike- and pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods. The Multicultural Communities for Mobility and L.A. Metro are hosting the Eastside Mural Ride, a roughly 10-mile bike ride through East L.A. and City Terrace. Besides mural appreciation, riders will learn about bike safety and riding in traffic with insufficient bike infrastructure, and bike mechanics will be on hand in case of any blowouts or other mishaps.

9. Ice Age Encounters

A dynamic, 15-minute show features a life-size adult Saber-toothed Cat puppet, a live performance and film projections that bring the distant past to life. This multimedia performance is an experience where we dig into the past to uncover the mysteries of some of the extinct creatures who roamed Ice Age Los Angeles over 10,000 years ago.
